Cool Dancing Song

Someone mentioned to me a song by Lee Ann Womack, called “I Hope You Dance” and I just downloaded it and listened to it. It fits so well with the Scripture we looked at yesterday that I just had to post the lyrics.

I hope you never lose your sense of wonder
You get your fill to eat
But always keep that hunger
May you never take one single breath for granted
God forbid love ever leave you empty handed
I hope you still feel small
When you stand by the ocean
Whenever one door closes, I hope one more opens
Promise me you’ll give faith a fighting chance

And when you get the choice to sit it out or dance
I hope you dance
I hope you dance

I hope you never fear those mountains in the distance
Never settle for the path of least resistance
Living might mean taking chances
But they’re worth taking
Lovin’ might be a mistake
But it’s worth making
Don’t let some hell bent heart
Leave you bitter
When you come close to selling out
Reconsider
Give the heavens above
More than just a passing glance

And when you get the choice to sit it out or dance
I hope you dance
(Time is a real and constant motion always)
I hope you dance
(Rolling us along)
I hope you dance
(Tell me who)
I hope you dance
(Wants to look back on their youth and wonder)
(Where those years have gone)

I hope you still feel small
When you stand by the ocean
Whenever one door closes, I hope one more opens
Promise me you’ll give faith a fighting chance

And when you get the choice to sit it out or dance
Dance
I hope you dance
I hope you dance
(Time is a real and constant motion always)
I hope you dance
(Rolling us along)
I hope you dance
(Tell me who)
(Wants to look back on their youth and wonder)
I hope you dance
(Where those years have gone)

(Tell me who)
I hope you dance
(Wants to look back on their youth and wonder)
(Where those years have gone)

    Hey Dave,

Yesterday, while you were speaking of the ‘dance’, and here on the blog, as you recalled the works of the Womack song, I kept being reminded about something my mom used to say to us as kids. It was always during those times of disappointment, when our feelings or our pride would be hurt (by things so important then, and I can’t remember one now).

She would offer a cookie (or something yummy) to get our attention and remind us, “There will be times when things that happen are going to make you feel very bad, but, it makes Jesus really happy when we can shake off the bad feelings like when you shake the dirt off your feet”. Later, when I was a teenager, she altered it to, “Gracious (and grateful) Christian’s learn how to roll with the punches”. My mom was a wise lady.

I think it is the same as Peter’s dance. You reminded us yesterday that we need to ‘gracefully’ roll with the punches; when we are hit by hard things in life, to get up and shake the dust off as if nothing happened. I am trying to recall a saying, I think it is, “Keep on moving on?” I am not sure that is correct.

Sometimes life deals horrendous blows – but with God, we can ‘keep on moving on’ because HE is holding our hand. HE’s the one leading the dips and twirls of the dance.

As a side note, in your blog, you mentioned two people in the body with cancer. Does the church have a prayer list for such things so that others may pray for them too?

I just love this song Pastor Dave. I always have. Loved your message yesterday.

  3. Dave Rolph says:

    Lori,

    Thanks.

    Debbie,

How blessed you are to have had a mom who taught you how to roll with the punches of life. That is so cool. And yes, we do have two prayer lists at the church.

  4. Debbie says:

Well, that said, I was blessed that my mom tried to teach me to ‘dance’(roll) with the punches. Unfortunately it has taken a lot of punches to learn the lesson – and I am still learning. For most of my life its been a tumble, but most of those tumbles have brought me closer to God.

I just wanted you to know that your message was a reminder of my mom’s love and wisdom – thanks.
